Press Release
Rooster Hill Merlot, Riesling and Cayuga Win Bronze
at the 27th Annual International Eastern Wine Competition
Penn Yan, NY, June 2003 — The International Eastern Wine Competition (IEWC), one of the largest and most competitive tastings in North America, awarded Rooster Hill Vineyards bronze medals in three of the competition's most popular - and difficult - categories: Vinifera Red, Vinifera White and Interspecific Varietals.
Established in 1975, the 27th annual International Eastern Wine Competition took place May 19-21 at the Corning Museum of Glass, in the Finger Lakes region of New York. Judges are comprised of wine-knowledgeable professionals, media specialists and winemakers who represent major East Coast markets from Miami to Toronto. Each year the competition culminates in "Summer Bouquet," a public tasting of the winning wines, served by winery designates. This year Summer Bouquet will take place on June 13, 2003.
"We are incredibly pleased to be recognized in our first year of production," said Amy Hoffman, General Manager of Rooster Hill Vineyards. "These awards speak volumes about the commitment Barry Tortolon our Winemaker, and our entire team has made to making outstanding wines."
Using superlative French and American oak barrels for controlled aging, a DiFrechesci Press and Milani Crusher / de-Stemmer for production, Rooster Hill produced 2,000 cases in their inaugural run, purchasing Riesling and Cayuga grapes from local vineyards and Merlot grapes from vineyards on the north fork of Long Island.
In 2002, Rooster Hill planted their Savina Estate with Cabernet Franc, Riesling, Pinot Noir and Lemberger and expects to harvest as early as 2004. The Catherine Estate, planted this year, is at a slightly higher elevation, and includes Lemberger, Riesling, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir and Gewurztraminer.
